Secret Desire Chapter 5: The Needle Of Lust

Azman sat at the kitchen table at eleven o'clock, staring at the frozen chat on his laptop screen. Ana's two lines. "Stop it." "I am married and old." Below them, Arif's paragraph about rain and sun and laughing to the fullest. The cursor blinked at the bottom of Ana's message like a heartbeat that had forgotten to slow down. Nothing else had moved since then. The green dot beside Arif's profile picture sat steady and unmoving, still green, still online, still waiting for whatever came next.

He closed the laptop and set it on the table. The hinge made a small sound that would carry through the quiet house. He had to decide whether to let Ana handle the silence on her own or whether to intervene, and the line between those two choices was thinner than he wanted it to be.

He walked to the living room.

Ana was on the sofa with a book she wasn't reading. The pages hadn't turned in over ten minutes. She wore the same baju kurung she'd left the house in this morning, with the sleeves pushed up past her elbows. Her glasses were off, resting on the cushion beside her. When she saw him come in, she smiled.

"Do you want to watch a movie?" Azman said. The question came out casual. A husband asking his wife whether she wanted to spend a Friday evening with him, the sort of thing married couples did without thinking twice about it.

Ana closed the book. "I'm tired, Azman. Already in bed, lah."

"Fine, fine. Go to sleep early then."

He turned on the television to an old sitcom he'd seen twice before. The laugh track filled the room with artificial cheer. He adjusted the volume low, just enough to hear it without drowning out the house, and settled into the armchair with a glass of water he'd poured from the kitchen but never drank.

The stairs creaked above him. Each step announced her presence with mechanical reliability, as if the house had a heartbeat he could hear through the floorboards. She reached the landing. The bedroom door closed. A muffled click as the lamp switched off.

Azman watched the television without looking at it. The sitcom played out a plot about a man who forgot his wife's birthday. The humor was broad, slapstick. Nobody was watching it. The laugh track rolled in anyway, filling the room with the sound of other people's entertainment.

His phone sat on the table next to him, screen dark. The WhatsApp mirror session on the laptop was still running behind the closed lid. He could have reopened it at any point. Instead he let the remote sit in his hand and the volume stay low and the room stay dark.

Above him, Ana's side of the bed shifted. The mattress springs creaked once, settled, went quiet.

The phone notification pinged at eleven-forty. A single vibration against the nightstand, faint enough that it might have been the house settling. Then nothing. The second ping came at eleven-forty-three. Two pings from Ana's phone in three minutes. She was checking messages. Or she had checked them already and was just waiting for one that would matter.

Azman drank from the glass. The water was warm. He put it down and watched the sitcom. The man on screen was apologizing for forgetting the birthday, stammering something about traffic, and the wife was laughing in a way that made Azman think of Ana laughing at his own jokes. How many years had it been since she laughed at anything he said that wasn't already prepared in advance?

At eleven-thirty, a new message landed.

Azman had been sitting still long enough that the armchair's cushion held the shape of his body exactly. When he heard the faint notification sound, still audible through the laptop's speaker beneath the closed lid, he sat up straight. The laptop sat on the table in the kitchen, where he'd walked ten minutes ago to check on it before coming to the living room. He moved toward it without thinking, like a reflex, the body leading the mind.

Arif's message filled the width of the screen. A sad face emoji. Three paragraphs. He was sorry, he said, for how blunt he'd been. He hadn't meant to make Ana uncomfortable. He valued their friendship too much to lose it over one careless message. The emoji sat in the grey bubble beside words that were too careful to be careless.

Twelve minutes passed.

Ana's reply appeared. The typing indicator moved across the screen in three cycles, each one longer than the last. When the message landed, it was longer than anything Arif had written.

She was not angry. She was shy. That was the word she chose. Ashamed, too, but only in the sense that a person feels when someone looks at them with too much attention, and the attention comes from a man younger than her who should not be looking at her body the way he was looking. At forty, she said, a woman stops expecting anyone to notice her. She said it flat, a statement of fact, and then she added something else. She was also kind of happy. Happy that Arif still saw her as attractive. Happy that she had not faded into nothing, that her body still meant something to someone besides her husband.

The message sat on the screen. Azman read it once, slowly, letting each sentence absorb into whatever part of his brain processed intimacy between strangers. Then he read it again, faster. The second pass went through in a blur. The third pass was a pause on her line about fading into nothing.

Arif's response came almost immediately. He was relieved. He thanked her. He told her she had always been beautiful and that she probably just needed someone to say it out loud. A kind man, Arif, when he wanted to be. The relief in his words was genuine, and the gratitude too. He was saying thank you for not blocking him, thank you for telling him how she felt, thank you for keeping him in her life.

Azman opened his notes app on the laptop. The cursor blinked at the bottom of the existing entries. He didn't type anything. His fingers hovered over the keys. The notes file sat open, the previous three sentences staring back at him from the night before, and beneath them, a blank line waiting for whatever he might decide to put there next.

He closed the notes app without typing. Then he opened it again. The screen showed the same three sentences. He closed it again.

By midnight, the conversation had turned.

Arif sent a new message. Shorter than Ana's reply, shorter than his apology. He asked where Azman was, since Ana was still up chatting with him at this hour. The phrasing carried a playful curiosity. A husband was awake at midnight, and his wife was texting her coworker, and Arif was putting two and two together without doing the math himself.

Ana's reply was factual. Azman was in the living room watching TV.

Arif's next message was a joke. He used the word "juga" in a construction that was half-Malay, half-English, something that only made sense in a Malaysian office context. Friday nights, he said, were when married couples should be busy in bed. Not when a wife was up at midnight texting her officemate. He added a laughing emoji to frame it as humor.

Ana replied with "hmmm.."

The two dots at the end were doing real work. They turned a single word into something that could mean anything. The "hmmm" was a sound. The dots were a pause. Together, they were a door left slightly ajar.

Arif sent "Why?"

Three sentences later, Ana answered "nothing"

Azman read the exchange three times. The structure of it was clean, and that was the most disturbing part. Arif had asked why. Ana had said nothing. The word "nothing" could have ended the conversation. It could have been a wall. But Ana had placed it at the bottom of an exchange where Arif had just implied that Azman should be in bed with his wife instead of watching TV downstairs. In that context, "nothing" meant something very specific. It meant there was something wrong in the bed. Something Azman and Ana did not do on Friday nights. Something Arif had already suspected and now had confirmation of, just by listening to what his coworker chose not to say after she was asked why she was still awake.

Arif did not push. He let the silence sit between his question and her answer, letting the gap speak for itself. That was the mark of a man who knew exactly what he had done. He hadn't asked the question to find out. He had asked it to see if she would confirm what he already believed. And Ana, by saying "nothing" in that particular tone with those particular dots, had confirmed it without saying a single word that could be held against her in a conversation with anyone other than Arif.

The final message arrived at half past midnight. Arif typed: I hope we can still be friends. I won't push you again unless you ask me to.

Ana did not reply.

Arif's typing indicator never appeared. The green dot pulsed once, slowly, and then went dark. Arif had gone offline. The conversation ended on a message that neither of them had answered, at a place where the line had been drawn and acknowledged and left to stand.

Azman sat at the kitchen table. The laptop screen showed the full exchange from Arif's apology through the Friday night joke and Ana's "nothing." He read it from top to bottom. He read it from bottom to top. Each pass revealed something he had missed on the previous one.

Ana was lonely. She was sexually unfulfilled. A man at her office had noticed her body, and she had told him about it, and she had told him she was happy about it, and she had not blocked him, had not cut him off, had not closed the door. She had told him that her husband was in the living room watching TV at midnight while she was upstairs in bed, and she had let Arif know that something was missing between her and Azman, and she had done all of it without once saying the word "husband" or "marriage" or "Azman" except in the single line where she told Arif her husband was downstairs.

She would not stop this. The line about fading into nothing was the key. A woman who said she was happy to be seen by a younger man was a woman who would not let the attention stop. She had said "I will think about it" days ago, and now she was saying more. She was telling Arif that she was available. That her marriage had a gap in it. That the gap existed before he arrived, but that he was the one with the eyes to see it.

Azman pulled up his notes app. The three lines from the night before were still there, waiting at the top of the document. Beneath them, he typed.

She is ready. I just have to wait for him to make the next move.

He saved the file. Closed the laptop. The room was dark except for the clock on the microwave that read 00:37 in red digits.

He walked upstairs. The stairs were the same as always, the third step creaked, and the landing light switch was on the left wall. The bedroom door was closed. Through the wood, he could hear Ana breathing, slow and steady, probably already asleep or close enough to it that the distinction no longer mattered.

He opened the door and stepped inside. The room was dark. Ana had turned off her lamp, and the nightlight from the hallway cast a thin line across the floor. She was on her side, facing the wall, curled slightly toward the center of the bed. The cotton sheet rose and fell with each breath. Her phone sat on the nightstand, screen dark, the charging cable still plugged in.

Azman sat on the edge of the bed. He lay down beside her. Close enough to feel the warmth of her back through the sheet. The distance between them was small. A palm's width, maybe less. He could have reached out and touched her, placed his hand on her shoulder, felt the shape of her through the fabric of her baju kurung. He did not.

Above him, the house was quiet. Below, the television was still on, playing to no one.

He lay on his back and stared at the ceiling. Ana's breathing filled the room, even with her face turned away from him. Each breath she took was a rhythm he had known for twelve years. He had memorized it long ago, the slow inhale and the longer exhale, the slight pause before the next cycle began. She was not looking at her phone. The screen was dark. But the phone was there, plugged in, charging, right beside her. Close enough to reach in three seconds if she woke.

Azman replayed the Friday night joke in his mind. Arif's words sat inside them, unedited, unchanged: a husband watching TV while his wife texted her officemate at midnight, and a joke about couples being busy in bed. And Ana's answer: "nothing." She had said nothing. The word itself had been the answer.

He did not turn over. He did not close his eyes. He lay in the dark beside his sleeping wife and waited for the phone screen to light up one more time.
