Before you pay a consultant thousands: 5 things about Australian visas you can 100% do yourself for free

NSFW

Not anti-agent — good MARA-registered agents genuinely earn their fee on complex cases (refusals, PIC 4020, tricky partner evidence). But I keep seeing people pay thousands for things that are free and honestly not that hard. Before you sign anything, know that you can do these yourself:

**1. Check your visa options and requirements.** Every visa's eligibility, documents, and conditions are published in full on the Home Affairs site. Reading the actual page for your subclass beats any consultant's summary of it — it's the same source they read.

**2. Check the real fees.** The official Visa Pricing Estimator gives you the exact charge for your situation. (Especially now — almost everything jumped ~25% on 1 July, and plenty of consultant websites still quote old prices. If someone quotes you a fee, check it against the estimator before paying.)

**3. Verify any agent is actually registered.** Free lookup on the MARA register — takes 30 seconds. If someone "helping with your visa" isn't on it and isn't a lawyer, that's not a discount, that's a red flag. Also: legitimate employers never ask YOU to pay for sponsorship — that's illegal, not a fee.

**4. Check your own visa conditions.** VEVO shows exactly what conditions your current visa carries (work limits, no-further-stay, study rules) — free, instant, official. Half the "can I do X on my visa?" questions get answered right there.

**5. Lodge straightforward applications yourself.** Student visas, visitor visas for parents, working holiday — for a clean case, ImmiAccount walks you through it. The Department doesn't score you higher for using an agent; they assess the same documents either way.

**Where an agent IS worth it:** refusal history, character issues, complicated relationship evidence, section 48 bars, anything where getting it wrong once costs you years. Pay for judgment on hard cases — not for form-filling on easy ones.

The pattern behind most visa scams is charging desperate people for public information. The information is free. Your job is knowing where it lives.

Not a migration agent, general info only — always confirm your specific situation on the official Home Affairs pages. What did you pay a consultant for that you later realised you could've done yourself? 👇
