[PSA] Pixel 4 / 4a Bootloop Fix: It’s NOT the location settings, it's the 115MB Google Play System Update. Here is how to protect your phone and fix your Wi-Fi.
Hi everyone,
If your Pixel 4, 4 XL, or 4a recently got stuck in a severe bootloop that forced you to factory reset, or if your Wi-Fi/Internet completely stopped working after recovering your phone, do not panic. I found the exact root cause and how to fix it.
Many users in the official Google Issue Tracker and other threads are guessing it has to do with "Location" settings. This is incorrect. The actual culprit is the recent 115 MB Google Play System Update found under Settings > Security. If your phone processes this specific file, it breaks the system partition and corrupts the network/DNS stack. Downloading it with location turned off will still trigger the bootloop.
To keep your phone completely safe and functional, follow these steps:
1. Stop the Automatic Update Immediately
You can still update your regular apps through the Google Play Store safely, but you MUST block the system from installing that corrupt 115 MB patch in the background:
• Go to Settings > About phone.
• Scroll down to the bottom and tap Build number 7 times to unlock Developer Options.
• Go back to Settings > System > Developer options.
• Look for "Automatic system updates" and TURN IT OFF.
• Never tap "Download and install" on that specific orange security update page.
2. How to fix your Wi-Fi if it's already broken (The F-Droid Method)
If you already did a factory reset, your Wi-Fi might refuse to download anything from the Play Store because the internal system DNS stack is broken. Changing system DNS settings won't work, but external APK downloads still work perfectly fine through your browser. Here is the workaround:
• Open your phone's browser (Chrome) and go to the official F-Droid website.
• Download the F-Droid APK.
• Once the download finishes, open the "Files by Google" app.
• Go to the "Downloads" category, find the F-Droid APK, and tap to install it. (If prompted, allow "Install unknown apps" for Files by Google).
• Open F-Droid and search for RethinkDNS (or any trusted local VPN/DNS tool).
• Download and install RethinkDNS.
• Activate it to force an external custom DNS.
• Boom! Your Wi-Fi will instantly start working properly and regular Google Play Store downloads will resume.
I have already submitted this full technical breakdown along with screenshots to the official Google Issue Tracker (Issue #519655834). Let's hope Google fixes this corrupt file from their end very soon.
Don't let your Pixel 4 die! Spread the word so people stop guessing and actually protect their devices.
