Do you go on vacation if you have a senior dog?

Advice

I have a 14 yo 27kg dog. He has early signs of arthritis and has an asymptomatic heart valve disease. He has indication to do an ecocardiogram in November and an X-ray in September to decide if we start Librela before winter. Meanwhile the vet said to give him supplements to protect the joints. Besides that he has liver enzymes slighty elevated but the vet said it is not a concerning value for a dog his age and just suggested I do an abdominal ultrasound when I do the X ray.

He goes to the vet clinic every 3 months but for these exams I take him to the hospital which is a bit farther away.

When I go on vacation he stays in the same house, his routine and food is the same, because I live with my parents and they look after him. I also have cameras to monitor him, though since my mother is retired she spends a lot of the day at home. I never go outside of Europe so its closer in case I need to come back and never more than 2 weeks. My mother says he doesn't notice a lot when I am gone so he doesn't have separation anxiety.

Yet I feel extremely anxious to leave him. When I get to my destination I enjoy but the days before I get terrible anxiety. I always felt like this but as he gets older its getting worst. My worst fear is that he dies while I am not here. I don't want him to die alone.

Did anyone experience this? Did you stop taking vacations after your dog reached a certain age? Do you think it is irresponsible to do so?
