Wind Phones--A Line to the Dead...

Spoiler

A few years ago I came across something I'd never heard of before: Wind Phones.

They're real.

In Japan, there's an old disconnected rotary telephone sitting quietly in a garden. People who've lost someone they love visit it to say the things they never got the chance to say. The line isn't connected to anything. The words are meant to travel on the wind.

I couldn't stop thinking about it.

There's something deeply comforting about that idea...

...and something profoundly unsettling.

A device built for conversation.

A receiver waiting to be picked up.

A line that isn't connected to anyone.

Or at least...

that's what we're told.

Grief has a strange way of making us hear the things we desperately want to hear. A familiar laugh. A voice calling our name. A memory that suddenly feels impossibly real.

Sometimes all it takes is a ringing phone at the wrong moment.

It made me wonder...

If you found a Wind Phone hidden deep in the woods...

If you lifted the receiver...

...and someone answered...

Would you know for certain who was on the other end?

Or would you simply believe it was the person you wanted it to be?

I'm genuinely curious.

If you stumbled across a Wind Phone and believed you had one chance to speak to someone you'd lost...

Would you make the call?

And if the voice sounded exactly like them...

Would you ever hang up?
