A simple checklist before calling a pro for a home repair issue

A lot of homeowners panic when something breaks and immediately call a contractor, but sometimes the first step is just collecting the right information.

Before calling a plumber, electrician, HVAC tech, or handyman, I’ve found it helps to document a few things:

  • What exactly is happening?
  • When did it start?
  • Is it getting worse?
  • Is there water, smoke, burning smell, sparks, gas smell, or flooding?
  • Is the issue constant or only happening when something is turned on?
  • Can you take one wide photo and one close-up photo?
  • Is there a model number, brand label, error code, or data plate?
  • What have you already tried?

For plumbing, photos of the leak area, shutoff valve, drain, supply line, or fixture help a lot.

For HVAC, thermostat photo, air filter photo, outdoor unit photo, and the equipment label can help the technician understand the system before arriving.

For electrical, I would not recommend opening panels or touching wiring, but photos of the outlet/switch/light fixture area and a clear description of the symptom can help.

For appliances, model number, error code, and a short video of the sound/leak/problem can save a lot of back-and-forth.

This does not replace a professional, especially for gas, electrical, refrigerant/HVAC, structural issues, sewage, flooding, or anything unsafe. But having better info ready can make the service call smoother and help the right person show up prepared.

Curious what pros here wish homeowners would send before a visit?
