Editing course selection

I am a first year and I just completed my course selection but was waitlisted for the majority of my required courses so I had to switch the times. however I ended up choosing 2 liberal education courses that I did not want. how long do I have to drop/add other courses or join waitlists? would you recommend joining long waitlists?
