Pretty much everything about him is dull. His ideology, his power set, a lot of his fights, he’s almost never actually interesting.

The whole “I’m a cog” junk that he had until the final arc is probably the least interesting ideology for a protagonist I’ve ever heard of in my life and isn’t compelling at all,his whole “I want to make it so people have proper deaths” earlier in the series also is kind of a nothing burger. Like… cool bro? Why would this compel me in anyway? His ideology only gets mildly interesting at the end when he has his talk with Sukuna and imma be real it’s far too late to make me care about this guy bro.

But arguably the bigger issue for me is his fights. I’ll put this as plainly as possible, yuji has arguably the least interesting fighting style in the entire manga and I don’t know how anyone could like it. Even when his fights are good, he himself is pretty much never the reason why. He’s a bland punch and kick merchant and when that fails his only strategy is punch harder or punch differently, it’s literally that one “THE RADIO STATION THEY PLAY THE SAME 5 SONGS” joke but it actually exists as a character and Good Scott is it dull. The only way his fights are in any way stomach-able is when the other guy has cool powers like when he fought Mahito or Choso or Sukuna. And at that point I’m not watching for yuji, I’m just silently rooting for the other guy. I want you to think about the best fights in the series, Gojo v Sukuna, the Sendai brawl, Hakari vs Kashimo, do you know what these all have in common? Interesting abilities and complex clashes. You just don’t get that with Yuji. He has the worst battles in a battle shonen despite being the head of said battle shonen. It’s honestly a little impressive.

To summarise, Yuji feels like if you took Naruto or Gon or another actually interesting protagonist, stripped away everything that made them cool, then didn’t give them anything in return. I’m far more interested in Gojo, Sukuna, Ryu, Choso and Yuta than I am in him.

I do not care for Yuji Itadori as a character.
