NICU levels matter more than people realize.
- Level II ("special care nursery") handles babies born after 32 weeks with problems expected to resolve quickly.
- Level III handles extremely premature or critically ill newborns of any gestational age.
- Level IV — New York calls these Regional Perinatal Centers — adds on-site complex surgery and the full range of pediatric subspecialists, so a baby never needs to be transferred elsewhere for higher-level care. New York has 56 hospitals with NICU beds and 17 Level IV centers statewide.
