Singer XL 1000

I have a Singer XL 1000 given to me by my mother. It also has the embroidery attachment. it is an awesome sewing machine, but I would like to get into embroidery. Is it worth spending the $100 to pickup a rewritable memory card that may or may not work, or have prices come down on entry level embroidery machines? if so, what machine would you suggest?
