Beware low emission zones in Europe - don't be me.

My Advice

My wife and I have been happily driving our rental car around France and just got back from Barcelona where we discovered that multiple places we have visited have low-emission zones, and we almost certainly will have picked up some fines.

We have been using Google maps, but unless you look carefully at the routes, you might not notice at first the warnings which appear down the bottom. Fines seem to be between 70 and 200 Euros.

The only way to avoid this, apart from not driving in these zones, is to get a sticker for your car. However that's not really an option if you are picking up the rental in another country as they take several days to weeks to arrive.

Totally fine with the sentiment behind the laws, but seems our case would not be exactly unusual so it would be nice if some reasonable solution was on offer.

Live and learn.
