I got passed over for a promotion. Now my manager wants me to train the person they hired for it.
i applied for a senior role on my team a couple months ago.
my manager told me i was doing good work but needed more “strategic experience” before i was ready. fair enough. they ended up hiring someone externally.
i have nothing against the person they hired. they seem perfectly nice and obviously this wasn’t their decision.
but now my manager wants me to create their onboarding documents and spend four or five hours a week teaching them our systems because i apparently know the work better than anyone else.
i said i was happy to answer questions and help them get settled, but i didn’t feel comfortable being primarily responsible for training someone into the role i was told i wasn’t qualified to have.
my manager responded that helping with this would be “exactly the kind of leadership we need to see from you.”
and honestly that sentence made the whole thing feel worse.
maybe this is genuinely my chance to prove i’m ready for the next opportunity. but it also feels like i’m qualified enough to train the person doing the job, just not qualified enough to receive the title or salary.
is refusing to own their training unprofessional? or is my manager asking too much here?
