Gonna try surf fishing. Anyone have cheap but reliable gear recommendations and tips?

Heading to the beach with my family in september in the atlantic city area; brigantine new jersey specifically. Hoping to get out and try surf fishing for the first time. I'm looking for some beginner gear recommendations for rods and reels, and any tips ya'll can offer especially for fishing the jersey shore. Thanks!
