hr told me it’s between me and one other. are they prepping me for rejection or just being honest?

I’ve (f21) gone thru 5 months and 4 rounds of interviews for a position at a company I interned with a few months back. This would be my first salaried job out of college so I’m quite anxious and new to the processes.

At the last meeting, it was basically just a tour of the facility and rundown of the job (all of which i already knew and had been to before as an intern and freelancer). It was a bit awkward as, again, nothing was new to me. I performed pretty well in all other interviews, or at least I feel I did.

At the end of the meeting, I was told they had started with 225 applicants and now were between me and one other candidate, and that they had an internal meeting scheduled to decide and would get back to me next week.

I feel grateful to have gotten to where I am, but should I temper my expectations since they told me straight up that I’m not the only finalist?
