Dragon Ball: Why I Think SB01-057 Might Be the Most Overlooked Card in Manga Booster 01
I’ve been researching SB01-057 (Bulma & Kid Goku) for the last several weeks, and the more I dig into it, the more I think this card deserves more attention than it’s getting.
I’m not saying it’s going to be worth hundreds of dollars.
I’m simply asking whether the market has fully priced in what this card actually represents.
-
It’s the beginning of Dragon Ball.
Out of the entire set, Bandai chose the artwork of Bulma meeting Kid Goku—the moment Dragon Ball begins.
Not a fight.
Not a Super Saiyan transformation.
Not Frieza.
The beginning of the story.
Considering SB01 was released as a 40th Anniversary Manga Booster celebrating Toriyama’s manga artwork, I don’t think that choice was accidental. -
It doesn’t feel like a normal base SR.
When you hold SB01-057 next to the other base SRs, it stands out.
Gold trim
Premium finish
Full color artwork
Much more premium presentation than many of the other base SRs -
Bandai kept using this artwork.
This same artwork received:
Base SR
Alt Art
Winner Promo
Out of hundreds of Dragon Ball illustrations, Bandai kept elevating this specific image.
To me, that’s meaningful. -
The market has already started separating it.
Recent PSA 10 sales have been around the $150 range.
Winner Promos are selling in the thousands.
Meanwhile, many collectors still look at the base version as “just another SR.”
That’s what caught my attention. -
Supply feels much tighter than I expected.
I’ve been tracking this card across multiple marketplaces.
Current observations:
Around 1,646 lifetime TCGplayer sales.
Roughly 50 active eBay listings when I last checked.
Most Whatnot streamers I talked to either don’t have one or have only a couple.
Many streamers told me they would rather keep their copies than sell them cheaply.
Obviously none of this proves a print run.
But it does suggest supply may be tighter than I originally thought. -
Sealed product tells an interesting story.
SB01 sealed has appreciated dramatically since release.
That raises a question:
If sealed product becomes increasingly expensive to open, why wouldn’t important singles eventually begin reflecting that?
I’m not saying they have to.
I’m just asking whether the market has fully caught up.
My Thesis
I think SB01-057 has several things working in its favor:
It represents the beginning of Dragon Ball.
It comes from a commemorative 40th Anniversary set.
It uses Toriyama’s manga artwork.
It received premium treatment despite being a base SR.
It has multiple prestige variants built around the same artwork.
Supply appears tighter than many people expected.
Could I be wrong?
Absolutely.
Maybe the market has already priced all of this in.
Maybe more copies come out over time.
Maybe Fusion World slows down.
Those are all real possibilities.
I’m simply sharing the research I’ve gathered because I found it interesting.
I’m curious what the community thinks.
Am I overlooking something?
Has anyone else noticed SB01-057 separating itself from the other base SRs?
Has anyone seen distributor allocation information or additional case-opening data that could help understand the overall supply?
I’d love to hear other collectors’ perspectives.
