positive IUD replacement
An update to a post I made a month ago:
I had my IUD replaced today and overall it went well, and MUCH better than the first time. My doctor had me take 600mg ibuprofen beforehand, and hydrocodone and Valium once I arrived. I also had cervical lidocaine cream applied during the procedure. For me, the metal speculum itself is quite painful (I almost backed out of the procedure just from having the speculum placed) and it had to remain in for 10 minutes while the cream took effect, but it was so worth it!
The removal was very quick (the “cough” method DOES help!) and not terribly painful. The insertion was still painful because the lidocaine cream doesn’t numb the actual uterus, but it was still much much better than my first insertion without any numbing. They also gave me a heating pad for the procedure and that was surprising pretty helpful for the pain too.
I had the best care team possible - they let my best friend come back with me, they played a “feminist IUD insertion” playlist (lol) during it, and constantly checked in to see how I was doing and if they could make me more comfortable. I’m so grateful for them & for the advice on this sub to get the lidocaine.
I hope this helps anyone considering an insertion to know that there are multiple things that can help it be more tolerable and that you deserve pain management options! 🫶
