Digging for queens

I have seen people mention that they have dug their queens from under the ground. Presumably from the nest I would think? I wanted to ask, is it frowned upon to do this? When is it acceptable and when is it not? Not trying to cause a stir, just a civil discussion with those more experienced than myself.
