[TOMT][BOOK][EARLY 2000S MAYBE] A SCENE WHERE A GROUP OF MEN GO DOWN TO TUNNELS TO INVESTIGATE AND SLOWLY LOSE MEMEBERS

It was a book where a group of men go down into these tunnels(?) and are looking into where the tunnels came from I think?

They start out as 20 of them and then slowly lose members but as they lose members they lose all memories of them as well.

By the time it gets down to like 5 of them, they know they came down with more people because they have traces of their equipment but they cant remember any of them or anything about them
