# Das Integrationslabor

**Monument Hall XI**

**Laboratorium für Mechanische Kopplung und Verteilte Steuerung**

The room is unlike the previous three. There are no telescopes. No brass circles. No great instruments standing proudly at the centre.

Instead...

the room resembles an enormous mechanical workshop. Hundreds of polished brass shafts disappear into the floor. Flywheels rotate silently. Belts move overhead.Vertical line shafts connect floors. Glass tubes carry coloured oil. Differential gears rotate behind glass covers.

**Every mechanism is moving.**

None appears connected to any obvious purpose.

The hall itself is nearly fifty metres long, Twenty metres wide, and Nine metres high. Large skylights flood the room with cold morning light. The entire building seems alive.

**Yet almost nothing makes noise.**

Professor von Riedel says only:

>"Yesterday you calibrated instruments. Today you shall calibrate yourselves."

Neumann continues.

>At the centre of the room stands **Der Gekoppelte Integrator**.

It is not one machine. It is nearly one hundred. Each performs an elementary physical operation.

* A lever.
* A pulley.
* A spring.
* A gear train.
* A hydraulic accumulator.
* A governor.
* A differential.
* A ratchet.
* A friction brake.

None accomplishes anything useful individually.

Collectively...

**they solve problems.**

The Academy discovered something peculiar decades ago.

Whenever a single investigator attempted to optimise the machine...

***its performance improved locally.***

***Overall performance deteriorated.***

The mechanism became increasingly elegant...

while accomplishing progressively less.

Only pairs consistently succeeded.

Even then...

**only some pairs.**

The participants are informed of the rules.

Each dyad receives one control station.

Neither member can see the entire machine.

Each sees roughly sixty percent.

The overlap is only about twenty percent.

Neither possesses sufficient information alone.

Communication is unrestricted.

Time is limited.

The objective appears simple.

Adjust approximately forty control wheels until the machine reaches maximum mechanical efficiency.

No instructions are provided.

No equations.

Only measurements.

* Torque.
* Temperature.
* Angular velocity.
* Vibration.
* Noise.
* Timing.
* Power consumption.

Some improve when adjusted.

Others worsen.

The system possesses numerous local optima.

Improving one subsystem often degrades another.

After approximately thirty minutes...

patterns emerge.
