10 Year Old Daughter-Neurological or Anxiety related experiences?
10 year old female daughter-unsure of current weight, medical history includes suspected Celiac disease (in process of getting diagnosis, initial bloodwork indicating she has it and two immediate family members are officially diagnosed), previous reports of visual snow without official diagnosis (eye doctor said she was too young to diagnose when we initially looked into it around 6 years old). At birth was in NICU for 10 days due to infection, received antibiotic treatment.
My 10-year-old daughter has recently started describing some experiences that have me wondering whether this sounds more like anxiety, something neurological, or something else.
About a month ago she told me, "I hate that feeling." When I asked what she meant, she said, "When you're doing something or you're somewhere, but it feels like you're not there." She became very upset, started crying, and repeatedly asked, "Am I okay? Am I going to die?"
Around the same time, during a music lesson, she had an episode where she said the outer parts of her vision became shaky and blurry. She felt lightheaded, like she might faint, and again felt like she was going to die.
She has always been somewhat anxious when she's sick and often asks if she's going to be okay, but over the past month the fear of dying has become much more frequent and intense.
This past week she told me that she sometimes gets a strange sensation where she focuses on a person or object, and everything in the background becomes blurry. When it happens, she becomes terrified that she's going to die. She says this happens daily, although I'm not sure whether it's truly every day or if it just feels that way to her. It definitely seems to be happening more often recently.
I'm wondering if this could all be anxiety or panic attacks, especially because of the intense fear that accompanies it. At the same time, the visual symptoms and the "feeling like I'm not really there" make me wonder whether there could be something neurological or medical going on.
Does this sound like anxiety and maybe needing mental health support or something that should be evaluated by a neurologist or another specialist? We will, of course, be following up with her pediatrician, but I'd appreciate any thoughts or similar experiences in the meantime.
