She broke away from a cycle of abuse, addiction, and violence the moment her son was born, proving that her love for him was stronger than any environment she was trapped in.

# Childhood in the Orphanage

Fan Man Yee’s life was deeply unstable from its beginning. Born in Shenzhen, China, in 1975, she was abandoned by her family as a young child and subsequently placed into the social welfare system of Hong Kong. She spent her formative years growing up in an all-girls orphanage located in Ma Tau Wai. Without parental guidance, familial support systems, or a traditional home environment, she had to rely entirely on herself to navigate her early childhood.

# Facing the Streets Alone

Upon turning 15, Fan reached the strict maximum age limit allowed by the orphanage and was mandated to leave the facility. With no family or housing structure to turn to, she became homeless on the streets of Hong Kong. This lack of stability led to struggles with substance abuse, and she was pulled into street prostitution for survival. By the age of 21, she was working out of a brothel named Romance Villa, located in the Sham Shui Po district, operating within a dangerous and highly volatile environment.

# A Volatile Marriage

In 1996, Fan married one of her clients, a fellow drug addict named Ng Chi-yuen, in an attempt to establish a domestic life. However, this environment did not provide safety. Her husband was physically and emotionally abusive, creating a highly toxic household. Neighbors in their Mong Kok apartment building documented the severity of the situation, frequently reporting violent, late-night domestic disputes that disrupted the building and heightened her isolation.

# Turning Her Life Around For Her Son

The definitive shift in Fan’s life occurred in November 1998 when she gave birth to her son. The responsibility of motherhood motivated her to actively break her existing patterns. To shield her child from the environment she had known, she ceased using drugs and withdrew entirely from street prostitution. She took a lower income job working as a hostess at the Empress Karaoke Club to establish a legitimate means of support. Shortly before she was targeted by her captors, she made the critical choice to leave her abusive husband, permanently removing herself and her five month old infant from the domestic violence of the Mong Kok apartment to give him a safe foundation.

# Her beloved Son

Following the loss of his mother, Fan Man Yee’s infant son was placed permanently into the custody of the Hong Kong Social Welfare Department and assigned to legal guardians. Because Fan had taken the critical step of completely separating him from her environment and leaving her volatile marriage before she was targeted, her son was entirely removed from the danger and never witnessed or experienced the trauma that claimed his mother.  
To protect his identity, emotional well being, and future, the Hong Kong government placed strict legal confidentiality over his records. He was raised entirely outside of the public eye under a new identity, ensuring that the sensationalized media coverage surrounding the 1999 case would never disrupt his life. Because of his mother's ultimate protective actions, he was given the opportunity to grow up in a stable, secure, and peaceful environment completely disconnected from the hardships of her early life.

# Her Motherly Love

Every single choice she made was a reflection of a mother doing her absolute best in an uncaring world. By packing up and leaving her violent marriage, she gave up her only form of financial security, risking everything to ensure her five month old baby boy had a peaceful future completely disconnected from the darkness of her own past.

When you think about Fan Man Yee, she absolutely should not be remembered for the Hello Kitty case or the horrific way she was taken. Her name doesn't belong to the people who hurt her; it belongs to the choices she made as a parent. She grew up abandoned by her family and raised in an all-girls orphanage in Ma Tau Wai with nobody to look after her, but the moment she became a mom, she made sure her son got the exact love and protection she was always denied. Her real legacy is that deep, protective drive. She should be remembered as a loving mother who completely altered her son's path in life.
