LFB – Anime K-ON! longfic, CC/OC slow burn | prose, pacing, and chapter rhythm

looking for a beta reader

Hi all! I'm looking for a beta reader for a long, ongoing K-ON! fic that I've been working on for quite a while. The fandom and pairing are fairly niche, so I'm not necessarily searching for someone with extensive canon knowledge. What I most need is another pair of eyes on the prose, pacing, and rhythm of the chapters. English is not my first language, and after rereading and editing the story largely by myself, I've reached the point where I'm overthinking nearly every sentence and struggling to tell what is genuinely not working from what I have simply looked at too many times. I'd love to connect with someone who enjoys slow, character-driven queer fiction and would be comfortable offering honest but constructive reader reactions.

More data below:

Username: BassCleff

Site: Archive of Our Own

Fic title: Truth of Touch

Fandom: K-ON!

Pairing: Akiyama Mio/Original Female Character

Trope/genre: Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers, Queer Coming of Age, Character Study, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Slice of Life, Music

Content warnings: Discussions of compulsory heterosexuality and internalized shame; emotional infidelity while a character is still in a failing relationship; eventual consensual sexual content between adults. More detailed warnings are included on AO3 where necessary.

Summary/synopsis:
In 2011, Mio begins her sophomore year at university expecting her life to continue along the path she has already chosen: music, her closest friends, and a relationship with a nice boy that should make sense on paper. Then she meets Naya, a Spanish exchange student, fellow bassist, pedal enthusiast, and apparently impossible person to stop noticing.

What begins as musical curiosity slowly becomes friendship, emotional intimacy, and a relationship neither of them initially knows how to label. The story follows Mio as she questions what she wants, who she is when she is no longer following the expected script, and what it means to actively choose another person.

It is a long, character-driven slow burn told mainly in close third-person present tense from Mio's perspective. Music, bodily awareness, awkward humor, repression, and small acts of intimacy are central to the story.

Current status: 67 chapters, ongoing.

Current word count: Approximately 800k.

Planned length: Longfic. Don't know how many chapters. I don't know if I'll reach 100, but if I do, not much more than that.

What do you need from a beta reader?
I'm mainly looking for feedback on prose, pacing, and the internal rhythm of individual chapters.

English is not my first language, and lately I have been overthinking my prose quite a lot. I would really value another pair of eyes who could tell me where the writing feels natural and immersive, but also where it becomes repetitive, overexplained, too abstract, too lyrical, or emotionally redundant. I have ADHD, so I tend to repeat myself; I'm also insecure, so I tend to explain, sometimes, the implicit message in the prose as if I didn't trust the reader, like: write what happens, I explain it, I explain it again, I keep explaining it with other pretty phrases. I sometimes worry that I explain a feeling after the scene has already communicated it, or that a chapter contains many individually good moments without enough movement or shape as a whole.

I would especially appreciate feedback on:

  • Sentence and paragraph rhythm.
  • Whether scenes remain grounded rather than becoming too introspective.
  • Pacing within chapters.
  • Repetition of ideas, gestures, or sentence structures.
  • Whether emotional developments feel earned and understandable.
  • Places where the prose sounds unnatural to a native English speaker.
  • Whether chapters feel complete, or as though they are missing a stronger turn, escalation, or conclusion.

I'm not necessarily looking for someone to correct every grammatical detail or rewrite the prose into their own style. Honest reader reactions and developmental feedback would already help enormously. Comments such as "I understood this the first time," "this section slowed down," "these paragraphs repeat the same emotional beat," or "I wanted to remain in the physical scene for longer" are exactly the kind of observations I need.

Knowledge of K-ON! would be lovely, particularly because Mio is a canon character, but it is not essential. The story takes place after the original series in a university setting, and I would also be very interested in the perspective of someone approaching it primarily as queer character-driven fiction. Familiarity with canon/OC relationships is a plus, but no enthusiasm for the pairing is being demanded in advance. I mainly need someone willing to engage sincerely with what the story is trying to do.

Because the fic is already long, I completely understand if someone would prefer to begin with the current chapter I'm writing or a short selection rather than committing to the whole work. We could treat it as a trial read and see whether our feedback and communication styles are compatible.

I'm also happy to discuss expectations, boundaries, turnaround times, and whether you prefer commenting directly on a document, sending general notes, or talking through chapters conversationally.

Thank you to anyone who has read this far. I have been writing this story largely alone for a long time, and I think I have reached the point where care and endless rereading can no longer replace another human reader. I would be very grateful for thoughtful criticism, including criticism that tells me something is not working.
