Should I bring up *intimacy issues* at couple's therapy?
Me (39AFAB NB) and my husband (54M) have been together 12 years and recently started couple's therapy. Had our 7th session this week. It's going really well and we really like our therapist as she specializes in couple's work (EFT) and neurodivergence.
The thing is, I can talk openly about sex eventhough it's awkward. I have my high school health teacher to thank for that, as I grew up in a sex-negative household. All these years later I still use phrases she did to break tension around the subject. Plus I listen to Savage Lovecast every week (Dan Savage, sex advice columnist) so our relatively "vanilla" preferences seem a lot easier to work with comparatively.
My husband was raised catholic. Eventhough his mom ended up being a witchy hippy later on, very open minded and non-judgmental... whatever my husband was taught in school really did a number on him. He's made a lot of progress talking about sex in the abstract, and is super supportive/non-judgmental of my, shall we say, storied past. But anything about what we do together, he shuts down. It was a bit better when he listened to the Lovecast, too, but got bored with it after some years.
So I'm afraid to bring little things up, like a lack of aftercare, as my libido is already higher than his and the last thing I want is less sex. We already schedule it in advance and he takes ED meds, so there's less pressure on him. But that has only kinda shifted the pressure to me. I know he enjoys the sex we have, and he tells me he finds me attractive if I ask, but I feel like I'm always guessing how to please him and trying not to get in my own head, and I'm not getting the positive feedback I'd really like.
Part of me wants to discuss it outside of therapy, as I'm worried he'll burst into flames from embarrassment with a 3rd party present. But I know I'm already mirroring his discomfort at home and speak less openly than I normally would. But he brought up our 5-year stint at polyamory a few sessions back, so maybe that's a good sign?? I don't know. Have any of y'all run into this or something similar. I don't feel like I'm articulating well, maybe just getting my thoughts more organized will help?
