Framing an Obojima Campaign around a "Solarpunk Schism" (Progress vs. Preservation)

I'm a huge fan of Dimension 20 and how they use real-world themes in the narratives of their campaigns. I've been brainstorming for an upcoming Obojima campaign, and I really want to lean into some classic, nuanced Studio Ghibli themes - I'm thinking about humanity's relationship with nature and progress.

I’ve been narrowing in on a central concept: What if the corruption is actually a direct byproduct of ancient, First-Age technology? Maybe the creation of these kinds of magical items had an equal and opposite cost. >!Maybe the ancients' solution to handling this cost was to outrun the corruption by engineering the island to move?!<

Instead of a simple "Good vs. Evil" story, I want to center the campaign's ideological tension on two competing, well-intentioned factions trying to solve the corruption crisis (aka global warming). It’s a schism between two different solarpunkish visions of the future:

  • The Progress Faction (Bold Action & Slight Authoritarian Lean): Inspired by concepts like Ezra Klein’s "Abundance Agenda". They believe that human ingenuity and technological innovation are a part of nature and it is our duty to be stewards. They want to aggressively scale up technology and engineer their way out of this situation, even if that means a temporary win. Maybe they're willing to make more first-age tech, further sacrificing the future for the present. I also suspect they'd be willing to go a little too far in shutting down dissent.
  • The Preservation Faction (Paralysis by Analysis & Symptom-Focused): Rooted in sustainability and cooperation. They want to fully understand what the corruption is and find a way to fix it permanently. They're treating side effects right away (e.g. displaced people and spirits), but they're unwilling to make bigger compromises, so they might be moving too slowly. They're probably too focused on treating symptoms rather than the root cause.

I want the player characters to be caught right in the middle, forced to make tough decisions about the island's ultimate path or to find a good third way. Neither side is "evil"; both want to save Obojima, but their methodologies are very different.

Would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, or any pitfalls I should avoid with this kind of setup!
