The word use of tribe in Anglo culture

Discussion

During colonial expansion (especially in the 19th and 20th centuries), European powers used "tribe" as an administrative tool. It was an easy way to categorize large, complex Indigenous and African societies into rigid, manageable groups—often allowing colonial officers to install puppet "chiefs" for easier control and taxation

Colonizers needed a way to frame themselves as superior. In the Anglo-colonial mindset, the word "tribe" was explicitly paired with words like "savage," "primitive," "barbaric," and "uncivilized"

Early 20th-century anthropologists and sociologists utilized the word to map stages of human development. In this outdated worldview, "tribes" were viewed as primitive social steps.

The degrading nature of the word is clearest in how Anglo-influenced cultures but historically refused to apply it to white people.

So the big question here is do Indian u.s people like being degraded ?
