Why did Jeor Mormont join the nights watch?

Please dont tell me it was because of his son's crime? Jorah was already lord of bear island when he sold the poachers into slavery right?

But idk it just seems wierd. And when he joined he was just a recruit or whatever. Its hard for me to imagine Jeor in any underling role.

So why did he take the black?
