weather warning
no one else hears the forecast.
the sky is clear.
the birds sing as though the clouds
have never cried before.
but something i have learnt
is to watch the horizon.
because storms here
arrive wearing sunshine.
i have become fluent
in the language of the wind.
how it hesitates.
how it changes its mind.
how the trees hold their breath
just before they bow.
sometimes nothing happens.
other times,
i carry my umbrella
all day long
for rain that never falls.
still,
my shoulders remember its weight,
tucked away inside the ridges and folds.
a handle shaped by hands
that forgot
how to travel empty
perhaps
that’s why i wonder
if safety is a place,
or just a season
i no longer
remember.
or if, somewhere along the way,
i simply forgot how to believe
a blue sky
could just be
a blue sky.
