What does it take to become a medalist?

Incoming 1L and I know already that everyone works hard in law school, but what does it take to become a medalist? Can anyone tell me what they did to crack the code?

I want to be able to continue training (Jiu Jitsu/Muay Thai) and still have time for my wife and family, while trying to do very well. I'm worried that how everyone has described law school, it appears that I won't have time to do my hobbies and succeed. Is that true?

I'm also confused about clubs. I'm only really interested in mooting when that becomes available. I don't necessarily have an interest in clubs. Is that going to shoot me in the foot?
