How true and bad are news about Rio Unsafety?

Have been reading online about Rio. Apparantly the Canadian, Us and uk have cautionary notices regarding Rio. Tourist are getting drugged in places like lapa, Read that last year a bus got hijacked by favella criminals, carjackings. One outlet talked about how GPS routed a tourist from Christ Redeemer to favella and they got killed?

All this seems really scary. And also saddening because as an expat I truly considered living. Had this romanticised Idea about Rio, cool beaches, cool people, great culture, etc.
