I don’t usually post personal stuff online, but I feel like I’m out of options.
Over the last couple of months, my life has completely unraveled.
About a month ago, I was scammed out of around $40,000. It wasn’t some crypto scheme or anything like that—it was through my hobby/business. I spent the last year and a half building up a collection that meant a lot to me, and after losing that money, I made the painful decision to sell almost everything I owned just to try to recover some of it.
I found someone who wanted to buy my collection in person. I wanted cash, but he insisted on paying through PayPal using his business credit card. He was a vendor, so I figured it was legitimate. He told me that because he was paying with a credit card, it would automatically have to go through Goods & Services.
We met in person. He inspected everything, paid me, took everything home, and that was that.
A couple of days later, he deleted our entire message history, blocked me, and filed a PayPal dispute claiming that he never received the order. PayPal is asking for shipping information, even though nothing was ever shipped because the transaction happened face-to-face. The dispute even lists a shipping address on the opposite side of the country.
I honestly don’t know how you’re supposed to defend yourself against that. I can’t magically create a tracking number for an item that was handed directly to him.
At this point I feel like I’ve become a magnet for scammers. Every time I think I’ve learned from the last experience, someone finds a new way to take advantage of me. Between the first scam and now this, I don’t have much left. I work full time, but I don’t make enough to recover from losses like these. It feels like years of work can disappear in a single bad interaction.
As if that wasn’t enough, my girlfriend and I recently broke up. We were both struggling with our own issues, and neither of us was in a good place to support the other. I don’t blame her, but it happened at probably the worst possible time.
I don’t really have family I can lean on, and most of my closest friends live hundreds or thousands of miles away. I spend a lot of time feeling like I’m trying to carry everything by myself.
I’m not asking anyone for money. I’m just exhausted.
Has anyone here ever come back from something like this? Whether it’s being scammed, losing everything financially, dealing with PayPal disputes, or just having your life seem to implode all at once—how did you keep going?
Right now it feels like every time I climb back up, life finds another way to kick me back down. I could really use some advice from people who’ve actually made it through the other side.

Current meal: mi goreng indomie instant noodles with kimchi, spicy fish cake, a double sunny side up egg, and home-brewed beer. And some watermelon in the background for dessert.

I genuinely don’t know how to recover from this anymore.
