companion for my 14 yo cat?

when we adopted our cat “teddy” 13 years ago, the foster owner said he needed other cats around. luckily we had already adopted another cat from the shelter named “pearl”. at the time, we didn’t know much about introducing cats to each other and we probably did a pretty bad job.

unfortunately the cats never really got along. teddy is playful and silly, and pearl was an aloof little princess. it always made me sad. they were together all the time but it never really clicked.

pearl sadly passed away last year, but teddy is still kicking. he’s definitely older (14 years old) but i hope he has another 5? ofc you can’t plan these things and who knows what will happen.

my question is: do we try again to get a friend for teddy? i work from home so he gets plenty of attention and pets from me. he seems pretty content and chill now, but still likes to play at least once a day.

sometimes i think we’ll be done with pets at least for a while after teddy passes. of course a new cat would change that plan. but it might be worth it for teddy, and i do get “cat fever” every now and then. any advice or insights?
