Hey everyone - I’m one of the developers of **Moduwar**, an RTS built around the idea that your base doesn’t have to be a fixed collection of buildings.

Instead, your base is the body of a living alien creature.

You begin with a heart that must be protected, then expand the creature by growing new body tiles and attaching organs to them. Those organs perform the roles normally handled by RTS buildings, units and upgrades: mouths gather food, defensive organs protect the creature, and biological weapons produce venom, poison and other attacks.

The mechanic that shaped the rest of the game is the ability to split and merge your body in real time. You can detach organs as individual units, divide your creature into multiple groups to control different parts of the map, or merge everything back into one large organism when you need a stronger defensive position.

One of our biggest design challenges has been making this flexibility strategically meaningful without forcing players to constantly micromanage every individual organ.

We’ve just released our biggest Early Access update so far, adding three new campaign levels, three Modu factions and three faction-specific organs. We also continued the story with live-action cinematics inspired by the FMV era of older strategy games.

I’d be interested to hear what strategy players think about the central mechanic: would you generally keep your base together as one powerful organism, or split it into several smaller specialized groups?

We built an RTS where your base is a living creature that can split into separate units
