AIO My roommate/friend keeps “joking” in ways that feel like testing/insulting me, I got mad, and now he’s not speaking to me.

🏠 roommate

I’m in university, living with my roommate who’s also a close friend. Last semester was rough for both of us. I made a lot of changes and turned things around, this semester went a lot better, and I’m now doing summer coursework to fix my first-semester mistakes while also working toward a research position with a professor. My friend, on the other hand, has been struggling the whole time, and I’ve tried to be there for him whenever he wants to talk.

Recently I had a deferred final exam I was studying hard for. My days have looked like: leave in the morning, study/schoolwork all day, gym, come home tired, plus I have a part-time job at a research lab and I’ve started cooking/meal-prepping all my own food for the first time. So I’ve been stretched pretty thin.

The “jokes” that keep happening:

**•**	He does exaggerated, inaccurate impressions of me
**•**	Calls me a “larper” for going to the gym with my shaker bottle
**•**	Makes fun of random stuff, like a sentence on my shirt
**•**	Randomly kicks me (lightly) in the back or legs as a “joke,” even after I’ve asked him repeatedly to stop
**•**	Asks me hypothetical questions like “what if someone broke your laptop, would you still be friends with them?” except the hypotheticals are always things *he’d* be doing to me, and it feels less like a real question and more like he’s testing what he can get away with

When I get annoyed and ask him to stop, he’ll toss out a quick “sorry” and act like that fixes everything, or say things like “I just want to make sure we’re ending on good terms” or “can we restart?” The tone feels insincere, almost taunting. I could be misreading it, but that’s how it comes across.

A few recent specific incidents:

**1.**	I was up late meal-prepping. He kept kicking my legs after I’d already told him multiple times to stop, while also peppering me with the “hypothetical” questions again.
**2.**	One night I said goodnight and went to bed. He apparently didn’t hear me (unclear how, since the door is thin and I said it right outside his room). He came to my room afterward and kept asking me to say “goodnight, love you” as a joke. I played along a few times, but he kept pushing it for a solid 5 minutes while I was already in bed with the lights off, trying to sleep. I eventually snapped and asked him to let me sleep. He gave me the silent treatment the next day, then was normal again by the morning after.
**3.**	Two days before my final: I was telling him about a World Cup goal I’d watched, and he interrupted with “good story” and walked off, then came back to ask if I found that funny. I ignored it because I didn’t want to deal with it. Then he asked if I’d gone to the gym. I said no, because I had a final in two days (first day I’d skipped in three weeks), and he walked off yelling “larper, larper” and laughing. He came back later and asked what my favorite lift was. Expecting another jab and not having the bandwidth for it, I said “can we not do this right now, I have a final.” He said “fuck you” and walked out.

Since then: He hasn’t spoken to me for 3 days, has cussed me out, and told me I’m “always starting shit.” I apologized for snapping at him that day, but he wouldn’t hear it and called me a prick.

There’s more stuff he’s done that I honestly can’t remember or keep track of. I usually just try to forget it and move on like nothing happened.

I don’t know if I’m in the wrong here, or if this is a pattern I shouldn’t be brushing off. Any outside perspective would help.
