Gameplay-wise, is there any benefit to making it hard to stay alive prior to Revivify?

5.5 Edition

I'm curious as to what the intent is behind the design of having the lower levels be so tricky and awkward, while at later levels short of a TPK you can generally always bring everyone back. Even a DM can't control your dice, and sometimes you just simply die early on and have to roll up a new character.

In my experience, the characters you make at the start of a campaign are the ones you want to really flesh out over time, so you don't want to see them die off quickly. Also in almost every game (video games!) I played prior to TT gaming, it starts off easy to get people invested and then becomes more difficult later on.

With all that in mind, is there any solid reasoning why combat is much more likely to end in a character being written off during the early stages instead of the later stages?

I will say that I personally don't mind having to roll up a new characters as quite frankly I have dozens of them I'd like to explore, and can always retry the character that died early in a later campaign. But I really am curious if there was a design decision made about this and what it might have been.
