Preventing bat to bat transmission

General Rabies Discussion

Hello,

I have read the FAQ.

I am a licensed bat rehabilitator for 28 years now, and have occasionally had rabid bats come in. I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I have been very careful with biosecurity over the years and am wondering about one of the steps I take.

I've had one bat this year that was positive for rabies. I sterilize all equipment and enclosures between bats, but have wondered about the mealworms. I know they cant carry rabies themselves, but how long could the virus survive in a dish full of worms? The rabid bat came in with very few symptoms the first few days, aside from lethargy. Since at first he fed out of the worm dish, and it is probable that some saliva was present on the worms, I threw out all worms, as I do with any ill bat, instead of feeding them to other bats. I was just wondering if I need to do this with confirmed rabies as the virus seems to be short lived outside of the body?
