Is it normal my vet doesn't want me to check glucose at all for the first 10 days?

My boy got diagnosed with diabetes (urinalysis) last week. Yesterday, during our 3 hour vet visit, I tried to ask about secondary testing since they both get very stressed out when we leave the house. She rejected secondary testing saying she was sure he has diabetes (said his levels are high and there's glucose present in his urine).

Anyway, I didn't want to use bexacat (they were very insistent on bexacat and vet only food) because of all the stories I've heard about side effects. I'm on my way to pharmacy to pick up needles for the insulin as they were out and then I'm back to the vet for the technician to demo how to use the insulin.

She told me yesterday, when showing me how to use the alphatrak, not to check his glucose at all during the first 10 days until the curve. Said it doesn't matter. Is it just me or does something feel very off about not doing secondary testing or any kind of monitoring when he's going on insulin for the first time?
