13900k with ddr4 (or 13980hx) vs Ultra 5 225f (or 230f) at $120 cheaper and DDR5

Build Help

I’m debated between a desktop MoDT build with the 13980hx on ddr4 from Erying (pretty reputable and plug and play these days with a Vaper Chamber too, although very niche for western audiences to know about).

This is basically a 13980hx which was a mobile chip, but mounted on a mATX desktop motherboard with much higher power limits (irrc 150w is easily no issue).

Performance of it on benchmarks seem to basically make it splitting hair different from a 13900x. However I’m unsure if 13980hx also has the voltage degradation issues as the 13900x, especially if I’m not over locking, although I only plan to cool it with a Thermalalright PS120 which is a twin tower air cooler.

I’m comparing this option with another Erying combo deal from them with their H810 motherboard but a beefed up version of it (more capable VRMs than you’d expect), and it can be combo-ed cheaply with a ultra 5 225f or 230f on DDR5.

DDR5 is more expensive but 225f and 230f are cheaper and only a 10core 10 thread due to no HT. DDR4 is cheaper but 13980HX is more expensive, and it’s a 20 core 23 thread with a fat cache (mobo I’m buying won’t support it on DDR5 even tho it can). Overall, the 225f and 230f came down to $120 cheaper due to saving on the cpu itself and on a lower wattage PSU despite the expensive RAM.

Now I don’t really care about multi-threaded speeds. This is more of a gaming pc and daily work pc. Any rendering will be done by QSV or the UHD as I only do video work. No other multi threaded scenarios so 10c10t and 24c32t maybe not an ultra big difference to me even p cores accounted for.

That said the 13980hx is still a good bit faster and as much as I don’t care about multi thread workloads, it’s still a massive good to have

225f and 230f gives me ddr5 ram that I can reuse down the line. But is weaker overall even in gaming.

Which path would you choose and why?
