My cousin roasted my resume so bad I couldn't sleep that night. Best thing that happened to me.

So my cousin works at XYZ(sorry can't disclose), not FAANG level but still a solid product company. Last month he called just to check in, "kaisa chal raha hai placements?"

I told him honestly — decent projects, DSA thoda kam but manageable, skills theek hain, but I was not getting shortlisted anywhere. Like not even OA calls. It was getting to my head a bit.

He asked me to send my resume "dikha toh sahi."

Sent it. Two minutes later he calls back and just goes off on me. "Bhai yeh kya template hai, pizza burger ke paise hain but proper resume pe invest nahi kar sakta? Font galat hai, structure ka koi sense nahi, yeh ATS se pass hi nahi hoga, matlab koi insaan padhega bhi nahi kyunki system hi reject kar dega."

I got defensive for like two seconds and then just sat with it because deep down I knew he wasn't wrong. I built that resume in like an hour off some random Canva template two years ago and never touched it again.

So I actually paid for a proper ATS-friendly resume — real structure, right fonts, formatting that doesn't break when a bot parses it. Honestly one of the better decisions I've made this year. I'm still not clearing interview rounds consistently, I'll be real, my DSA is still a work in progress and that's on me, not the resume. But the shortlist rate went up noticeably. Getting more OAs, more callbacks, which is more than I could say a month ago.

And yeah before someone asks — no I didn't just ask him for a referral. Most companies want at least 1-2 years experience before an employee can refer someone, so that route wasn't even open for a fresher like me.

Anyway that resume overhaul mattered more than I expected, so figured I'd share in case anyone else is in the same boat — decent skills, projects, just not getting past the first filter.

Just wanted to know that does anyone gone through the same thing before .
