Any medical assistants or anyone in general doing unpaid internship, how are you doing it?
I’m a 27 year old male who just finished my medical assistant program back in early June and started my MA internship around (I don’t remember the exact dates) late June. The school I’m attending is a trade school that also offers an MA program. They gave us a 6 week timeline to finish 178 hours of internship.
The problem for me is that, I’ve been without a job this entire year just up until a week ago I finally received a paycheck from my new job that I got. I had been without a job this whole year and have been scrabbling for any penny I could find to buy the things I need. I’m working as a security guard. It doesn’t pay the best but it’s just enough to get by. Luckily enough, the manager has been cool with me so far and agreed to working me the schedule that I want. I work 2 days out of the week and either a Saturday or Sunday (wtv weekend day they need me the most basically). For further context, I still live with my parents (yeah I know, I had a late start in life).
As you can imagine, starting to work has taken time out of completing my internship hours. My clinic is open from Monday to Friday. Friday is a half day and we close on the weekends. I know a simple fix would to be work Friday and the weekends as security but I don’t think my manager was too fond of that idea because the weekends are super slow and not a lot of guards are needed on the weekends. I also don’t want to push my luck because he’s been cool with me and I really need this job to bring in some money.
So far I’ve accumulated about 90 hours of internship. And I believe the deadline is this coming week. I’ve spoken to one of my instructors from my program and she confirmed that. She told me to speak to career services at the school and that it’s going to take a little “sacrifice”. I know when they say “sacrifice”, it comes from a good place but I feel like it’s way easier for them to say that than actually doing it. Like I have to pay for gas, groceries, bills, I try to help my parents out as much as I can. I feel like they don’t understand what I’m actually going to have to give up. It’s just not possible. I am smart with my money as well. I don’t spend on dumb things and I go cheap when I can.
Is there anyone in my current situation or has been? Whether you’re an MA or have done any unpaid internship. I know there are some internships that do pay but it’s rare. How did you guys do it? Or am I just being a baby? It’s just been so stressful. I’m slowly getting back on my feet and a little relieved from stress since making some money but now I’m stressed again because of this internship. I’ve been working so hard lately. There has been days where I only sleep for 4 hours. I’ve turned my life around so much. My family and friends are so proud of me and I would hate to fail my program over something so ridiculous. I’ve been a top student and have never missed a day of class.
TLDR: I’m a current medical assistant student doing internship that I’m not getting paid for. I’ve been struggling financially and finally got a job. This job has helped me a lot recently by helping buy the basic necessities that I need. The job has taken time away from completing my internship hours. I’m about to reach the deadline to complete my internship hours and I’m afraid I will fail my program. My question for other MA’s or anyone doing internship is, how are y’all getting by?
