Modern day slavery in Bihar and West Bengal.

Opinion

Private contractors called Thekadars literally purchase 12-13 year old kids from Bihar and West Bengal for ₹20,000 a kid, for the first 2-3 years, they carry sand and cement, and gradually become full-time construction labourers.

In small towns and districts of Odisha, all the labourers are either from Bihar or West Bengal, you'll never find a single native labourer.

We built a rental property, and even two new houses, each time the contractors were from WB, they let the teenage kids carry the cement and gravel mixture, while older and experienced labourers built the houses.

They build make-shift shed out of tin sheets and asbestos, and each contractor keeps 30-40 labourers to build stores and houses in that town.
