I'm worried we may be the last young family to live in my neighborhood
We bought our house in 2016. It was expensive, but not crazy. Our street was all older people.
Since then prices have gone through the roof of course. Meanwhile my street has become a wasteland as all the old people turned into snowbirds and their houses sat empty half the year.
I thought this would change when they downsized and moved. But the first who did was replaced by a single woman in her 50s who doesn't interact with anyone. Then another old couple is selling their house. Friends with young kids want to buy it but it's $600,000. So they don't think they can afford it. Meanwhile I've seen an older couple looking at the house. And a family we're friends with who live nearby and were renting got their house sold out under them because the owner wouldn't accept their offer.
I liked my neighborhood because it was multi-generational. I don't think only young families should live here. But it's frustrating that people who would still make a huge profit if they sold their house at a reasonable price list at a level only other wealthy retirees can afford. And it's even more frustrating to know they'll probably move in and then not even be in the house.
