Jealous of my friends friends
I have this friend who works at the same club as me in the summer. We go to different schools, his is all boys, and he’s in the grade below me. As brief preface this guy is amazing; he’s a super star athlete competing in various national competitions and soon international; additional he’s probably the best person I know. What I mean is that, just yesterday for example, at lunch he made us sit with someone who was alone to make them feel better. Nothing crazy, however, he’s just so considerate and also so funny, and those traits have obviously led him to be a lot of people’s friend.
What makes me feel horrible is that he’s always bringing up his friends from the school year or from competitions. For example, last night we got chipotle and ice cream, and in that time he brought up:
- his d1 commit rowing friend
- his Ivy League fiend
- his friend who took classes at Harvard as a sophomore in high school
- shooting skeet with his childhood best friend
- his world class mountain biking friend
- his group chat that has like a 6 year streak on snap
Here’s where I start to feel anxious and jealous. I’m pretty sure I’m never coming up in his conversations because I’m no superstar athlete nor have I known him since we were 2. Additionally, I think about how him and his friends have years long snap chat streaks, while I struggle to text with him where he does more then just react to my messages. It not just in private either. We will be mid conversation somewhere and he will go talk to somebody else he sees. Similarly a few days ago we were sailing and he left me to single hand(we sail 420s for anyone wondering) while he went to go swim with some other friends. All in all, it makes me feel like he’s my best friend but I’m not his.
While some of this is normal; to me it feels like I’m being led on as friend. Even at hangouts I feel bipolar. I’ll be so happy to see him and hangout with him, then he will do or say something that makes me feel like shit for 5 minutes before we go back to normal. I always feel so drained and like I have to watch what I say around him otherwise he will not like me anymore. Sometimes I feel like I want to gate keep him from other people and I know that that is very problematic.
More of a side note, but some of his friends and beliefs really upset me.
Multiple of his friends are sexist, homophobic, and racist. Even he sometimes will throw out a ‘joke’ about disowning a gay son or not loving them etc. it really upsets me because I think so highly of him, then I see him hanging out with this horrible people; I question my own judgment. Furthermore, I think that I’ll never be as close as him as his friends are because we simply do not hold the same beliefs.
Another thing is, despite being very kind, he is very steadfast in his beliefs. He despises drinking, and when he found out I drank he basically shut me off for a week. Recently had a bad experience drinking and decided to stop, when he asked me about it I said it really upset me and I’m in a bad place, to which he responded yes, you should be. While I actually think he was joking in this instance I still was really hurt by his words, and this is not the only time something like this has happened.
I know the world does not revolve around me and obviously he will have other friends, it’s just that those friends make me feel less important which gives me anxiety. I sometimes wonder if I would be happier just not talking to him, but I know I’d miss him, and I also don’t want to just be low level friends with him. Lastly, I occasionally try to bring up some of my concerns with him and questions, but I am so scared of accidentally pushing him away that I never do.
TL;DR:
My Friend always talks about his other cooler, and closer friends, even while we are hanging out. This makes me feel like I will never be as good friends with him as his friends are, and that makes me really jealous and anxious. Lastly some of the people he’s friends with I really don’t like, and this makes me question if I even should be his friend. I am too scared to bring up any concerns I have with him out of fear of pushing him away.
