22F - L1 compression fracture, two major surgeries, no sitting for 3 months. Has anyone else had a recovery like this?
Hi everyone,
I’m 22 years old and recently suffered an L1 compression fracture in an accident. I’ve since had two major surgeries to repair it.
The first surgery was to stabilise my spine. The second was a much bigger operation where they approached my spine through my chest, removed part of one of my ribs for access, and also took bone from my hip to use as a graft during the reconstruction.
My recovery restrictions seem much stricter than anything I’ve been able to find online, and I’m hoping to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.
I’ve been told:
No sitting at all for 3 months.
For the first 6 weeks, I can only lie flat, stand, or walk using crutches.
The only exception to the no-sitting rule is briefly sitting on the toilet.
After 6 weeks, I can start sitting for around 5 minutes at a time, gradually increasing from there if everything is healing well.
I won’t be able to drive for around 3 months.
When I search for spinal fusion or compression fracture recovery, almost everyone seems to be sitting within days or weeks, so I feel quite alone with these restrictions.
Has anyone else had an L1 fracture or a similar thoracolumbar injury with such strict “no sitting” rules? How was your recovery? When did life start to feel normal again? Any tips for getting through weeks of lying flat would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you so much.
