Travelling Vegan Wins

Wanting to post this (hope it's ok), as a UK resident but holidaying in Spain. I come here 2-3 times a year as it's my wife's home country, but one thing I've been challenged with since turning, has been food options. Wondering if anyone else can relate, Spain or otherwise? At home, I can build my own routine with known supermarket products and establishments, but Spain has been quite a learning curve.

Her home region is Murcia, famous for excessive pork and seafood consumption. I'm not out there to protest against a lifelong tradition and cause friction with my in-laws, and I commend their efforts to accommodate me. Event organisers (I went to a first communion a couple of months ago) really went out of their way to do me a personalised menu, even though it was heavily repetitive. And the family are cool, and home cook my portions separately from any animal products and let me fry my own tofu etc. to accompany :)

I'm now in Zaragoza for a friend's wedding and have been introduced to some vegan cafes, and other restaurants have been good enough to do their dishes without the meat/seafood/dairy. This is the thing - Spain's vegetables are DELICIOUS. They just happen to dump meat or cheese on it all, so it's not hard to do without, even if they do still charge me full price. You do have to be careful though, as so many waiters and waitresses still seem to think dairy is ok, and with the language barrier, I did have to send some stuff back to be remade. We must have side, time and time again, but I can only assume that the country isn't as schooled in veganism as the UK.

I also found a burger place that does a plant-based (still had to get the cheese and mayo removed), so I can get a protein hit at convenience. I searched the supermarket this morning because I want to eat light before the evening wedding (again, I have my own menu) and got me soya yoghurt, vegan protein muesli and walnuts! An easy protein/omega-3 win before an inevitable stack of fibre and carbs going late into the night.

So yeah, any experiences you have about travelling to other countries and working with what you have before you, please share!
