First PCS from AIT to Fort Bliss – Need Some Guidance
I’m graduating AIT at Fort Jackson soon and PCSing to Fort Bliss as my first duty station. I’m married, driving my POV, and this is my first PCS, so I’m hoping someone can explain a few things because I’m getting different answers.
How are PCS travel days actually calculated? Are they based on the official mileage from Fort Jackson to Fort Bliss, and do they start the day I sign out of AIT?
My PCS orders have a report date, but I’ve been told to “just report when I get there.” How does that actually work? If I have 5 authorized travel days, am I expected to report by the end of those 5 days?
My drill sergeants told us they’re going to submit some time off for us before we leave AIT. Can they also submit my 10 days of house-hunting PTDY, or is that something I have to request after I arrive at Fort Bliss? If the 10 days can be approved before I leave, do I report to Fort Bliss after those 10 days are over, or do I still have to check in first?
I’m entitled to DLA (Dislocation Allowance). Is that something I need to request before I leave AIT, or is it processed through Finance after I arrive? How long did it take you to receive your DLA?
When I go to the Transportation Office (TPO) for my PCS, what documents should I bring, and what paperwork will I be signing? I want to make sure I don’t miss anything.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s recently graduated AIT and PCS’d from Fort Jackson to their first duty station, especially if you’ve gone to Fort Bliss. Thanks!
