I hate that I cannot discuss my financial woes with my parents, because they are the “pull yourself up by the bootstrap” type of boomers.
I just got off the phone with my mom. I was telling her about my car breaking down, my rent going up, and being concerned about the amount of student loan debt my daughter is accruing. Why do I bother? Because when I’m overwhelmed, I want to talk to my mommy, even though I’m 52. What I always forget is my mom thinks that 80’s economics are still benefitting America. She thinks people who take out student loans agree to those terms, so that’s on them. She thinks that I will be able to buy a house, when she dies and her house is sold and split three ways, so I “have no reason to worry about becoming homeless” according to her. To her, car issues are what everyone who owns a car deals with, and it’s just part of life- mechanics have always been expensive, “we’ve all been through it”. When I suggest any of this is the government’s doing, she vehemently defends the current administration.
I just want to talk to my mom and have her empathize with me, but she will never do that. She will always remind me that my problems are my own, but if I put my mind to it, and prayed once in a while, god would help me become financially stable. Being told to pray is the least helpful thing she can say.
I work with a woman in her 70’s and I wish she was my mom. She is kind, generous, empathetic, and never judges anyone. I think about how different my life would have turned out with a loving mother like her. It makes me mourn what I really deserved as a child.
Anyway, I won’t let this get me down for more than a couple hours. And I won’t call my mom again to vent, until the next time I forget. lol
