Overstimulation feels like you're on fire and want to RUN
This is long sorry
I recently just quit a terrible 3-11pm hotel job and truly feel for those who have kids. This was not a typical hotel but one that was a bit run down. They were going to renovate into a Hilton beginning September, but the interim period until then was LITERALLY hell. I tried sooooo hard to hold on. Even with the concept spreads and PowerPoints, I could not stay until September it was that bad.
It actually felt like my nervous system was on FIRE and I was constantly needed it seemed like. Wanting to hide to avoid being needed was so real. Housekeeping was also short staffed and laundry was sometimes not always available (still washing or drying) so sometimes people would not get new towels for their room. This was an absolute NIGHTMARE during check in time since rooms also sometimes weren't fully clean, and people wanted discounts for the inconvenience. Imagine waiting until 6:30pm to get into your room and there are no towels in there at all and it's still kind of dirty. Then they come back to the desk and yell at me.
Having to CONSTANTLY apologize for things which literally wasn't even my fault and I just got to work was rough. If it wasn't housekeeping quality, it was showers leaking. If not showers leaking, it's trash from 7-3 that wasnt picked up since I had no houseman 3-11 (short staffed).
I actually crashed out over towels. I have never given out so many sets of towels in my life. It wasn't just one guest, and I had to leave the front desk to go to the laundry room (maybe 20 feet away) to get a set. Then, i would get a set for one couple and another couple would walk in, realize they need towels and I'd get asked again. omFG I just came from back there but I can't show the guest frustration so back to the laundry room I go. Do you see the fucking insanity??? This happened AT LEAST 10-20 times a shift, and sometimes it included 7-3pm's requests they could not complete because laundry was still being dried. So it usually piled onto my shift. If your towels are outside of your door because they said they would brings some up but didn't, I HAD to find a way to do it before I left at 11.
Then, one of our elevators went down and a guest got stuck in it within a few weeks of me starting. Had to call 911. Apparently that elevator had been flooded out by a storm years prior but the owners never bothered replacing it??? You know its bad when you read reviews from 2023 online and they complain about the elevator being down.
I just never felt so overstimulated in my life working there. I felt on edge everytime a guest passed through because I honestly didn't want to be constantly needed (yes I know that's my job but that hotel 3-11p shift was DIFFERENT). I felt dread before I would even go to work because I just knew I was walking into some bullshit, which I usually was. People running around, phones ringing, 4-5 people at the front desk and people looking stressed out. When I would walk in and the 7-3 girl would say "Okay Ms. Goodman, your room is not quite ready yet......" I'm like OMFG.
I literally didn't even last 2 months there. I wanted to bolt out the door within 3 weeks and I actually crashed out in the back of the laundry room area (back closet lol) on my manager when it was just wayyy too much. Rooms weren't ready and it was almost 6:30pm, towel requests were backing up and SHE was literally cleaning rooms with the housekeepers. When managers are cleaning (not even the housekeeping supervisor but my AGM AND GM) that's a red flag.
Back to night audit I go (11-7a) and very little overstimulation ðŸ˜
