Hot take: Face ID on iPad is more important than on iPhone
This is especially true if you use a keyboard/trackpad attachment, which is now offered first party by Apple to all of the non-mini iPads.
On a phone, the old Touch ID sensor was placed front and center in the home button, making it hard to miss and easy to trigger. You can even feel the sensor when it is in your pocket and unlock the phone before you look at it. The Base iPad and iPad Air regrettably have Touch ID integrated into the power button, which makes it awkward to reach during normal use (you have to take into account the orientation of the device and it is not located on the front). This is especially annoying when using the iPad with a keyboard, because you have to lift your hands off the keyboard to unlock the iPad. All of this is solved with Face ID, as it can unlock the iPad in any orientation, and makes it super simple to unlock even in the magic keyboard. At minimum if Apple is unwilling to bring Face ID to iPad and iPad Air they should sell the overpriced keyboard attachment with another Touch ID sensor in the keyboard lock button.
