The avoidant came back like nothing happened, but will he actually try to see me?

We dated very briefly and it was too great and he got scared and backed out. 3 weeks after me trying to push hard to understand if he wants me or not (a mistake, I now know) and him asking for no contact, a random girl he knows started stalking me on Instagram. He got back watching my stories, after avoiding them, but only after she did. After her not answering me about it, I asked him and he said she's "just a stalker, friend from school" and that they're not dating. It felt very obvious that it was a weird childish attempt to talk to me again, since it's been over a month since there was anything to tell her about me, and because he immediately started a conversation and started acting regularly.

Right now the girl is unfollowed and deleted because I was tired of the mind games, and he's still watching my stories. I know I'm reading a lot into it, but it just feels weird that a person that said "it was nice knowing you" less than a month ago suddenly acts like nothing happened...

I do want to try and get back with him, not without an honest conversation about his intentions, but i wonder if it's any use initiating it. Should I give him time to initiate it himself? Will he even do it if I let it go, or will it just fade to watching me on social media without talking? I don't mind starting the conversation, but I also don't want to push him away again. What should I do?
