my mom’s pitbull won’t stop mauling my dog
I’m desperate because this is our 5th emergency vet visit within a month. We originally got our first dog peanut (healer mix) during the pandemic and I was the one who trained her, potty trained her, socialized her, etc. she’s not perfect because she’s my first ever dog but i did my best. Since I’ve gone to college, my mom has adopted 2 dogs (pitbull, Belgian malinois) that she has not trained in the least bit. They were impulse adoptions (says she felt so bad for them). They’re not potty trained, know 3 tricks I taught them, don’t respond to their names, etc. I’ve tried my best during breaks but she gets upset whenever i discipline them and defends not training them (pitbull and malinois) because she says over and over she doesn’t have the “heart to train them”. This was somewhat fine until we had to move to a different state, where this set off the pitbull and now she almost routinely mauls peanut. In one attack i had to go to urgent care because i had multiple deep wounds in my hand from being bitten by the pitbull. Still, she refuses to even entertain the thought of rehoming the pitbull while also not making any moves to actually train her. She got the vet to put the pitbull on Prozac, but there’s still been 2 attacks since then. She is adamant that soon the maulings will stop on their own with time and medication. We have gotten into multiple fights about this but she is willing to let both dogs die on this hill (has told me that if they get TOO into it we have to ‘let nature take its course’ aka letting one or both die). My mom cannot separate the dogs on her own and i worry what will happen when i go back to school soon. No reasoning works with her. Has anyone managed to change their mother’s mind on a similar ordeal?
